Locally adapted Hygiene Promotion Box: fast and culturally appropriate response in Indonesia

Developed by the Global WASH Cluster in 2008, the standard HP Box provides essential materials for emergency hygiene campaigns. However, its generic, heavy, and expensive content lacks cultural and linguistic relevance. Its contents are outdated and missing resources on important topics such as inclusion, diversity and menstrual health.

Indonesia’s adapted HP Box is compact, lightweight and includes culturally relevant materials, such as locally illustrated picture cards and communication tools (in local language), menstrual hygiene management supplies, and practical items like loudspeakers, puppets and glo-gel for handwashing demonstrations.

Pre-positioned in Indonesia Red Cross’s main warehouse in Indonesia, the adapted box enables immediate hygiene promotion activities without procurement delays, ensuring quicker and more effective community engagement in disaster-affected areas.
