Regional Vector Control Training (Africa) – IFRC and Mentor Initiative

What is this training?

This package is from an Africa regional training on Vector Control, held in September 2025 and hosted by the Kenya Red Cross Society. WASH and Health staff from 14 National Societies (Francophone and Anglophone countries), alongside representatives from UNHCR and WHO, the IFRC, ICRC, other parnters.

This training aimed to empower WASH and Health staff in African National Societies to design and implement effective, contextually appropriate vector-borne disease control programs.

Format and length

Face-to-face training; 4.5 days. The course was delivered by a team of experienced specialists from the Mentor Initiative.

Content 

The training covered the following topics:

  • Transmission and characteristics of vector related diseases, with a focus on the most common: malaria and dengue.
  • The four common Vector control strategies (including prevention strategies); biological, chemical, environmental, and mechanical and their applications in humanitarian/emergency and more developmental settings.
  • Introduction to Insecticide resistance, WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme, WHOPES guidelines, and other important aspects of setting up a vector control program.
  • Safety, safe handling, environmental risk and safe disposal of common materials and possible chemicals used in vector control.
