Case study: Preparing for drought before it arrives – Early action in Harshin, Ethiopia

This case study documents the Ethiopian Red Cross Society’s activation of its Drought Early Action Plan in Harshin Woreda, Somali region, in June 2026, ahead of a Karan rain season forecast to bring near or below normal rainfall.

It follows the process from a training that brought together 72 stakeholders, through the dissemination of early warning messages across five kebeles, to the practical steps households began taking, including opening water reservoirs to harvest the first rains.

The case study is part of the Water at the Heart of Climate Action initiative, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
