How to treat water with PUR sachets: visual instructions

These are step-by-step visual instructions for household water treatment with PUR sachets.

PUR removes dirt and kills germs. It works well for muddy water, for example after floods. One sachet treats 10 litres of water.

You can use the instructions as they are, or adapt them to your local situation. They are available in 20 languages: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Bangla, Mandarin, Nepali, Tok Pisin (Papua New Guinea), Vietnamese, Burmese (Myanmar), Tamil, Pijin (Solomon Islands), Bislama (Vanuatu), Hindi, Kirundi, Somali, Bahasa Melayu (Malaysia), Bahasa Indonesia and Thai. Each language is available in PNG (picture) format. For other formats contact wash.cop@ifrc.org.

Important: When you distribute any water treatment product, people must be trained how to use it. Before you share these instructions, check:

  • The size of the containers people use. People need a 10-litre container for each sachet.
  • That the sachets you have treat the same amount of water as the instructions say. Adapt the instructions if they do not.

These instructions come from the IFRC manual Household water treatment and safe storage in emergencies.
