This case study outlines how Somali Red Crescent integrated protection, gender, and inclusion (PGI) into its drought emergency WASH response to ensure safe, dignified access to water and sanitation for the most vulnerable.
Amid a prolonged drought, Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) delivered water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) support to displacement-affected communities in Halabokhad, Mudug/Puntland — while embedding protection, gender, and inclusion (PGI) at every step.
The response included six water kiosks and ten gender-segregated twin latrines built closer to communities to cut travel distances and reduce protection risks like gender-based violence, dignity kits and menstrual hygiene education for 150 adolescent girls, and PGI/safeguarding training for staff and volunteers.
Community-led water management committees — including women, men, and persons with disabilities — helped ensure the response was inclusive, safe, and sustainable beyond the emergency phase.
