Session length: 60 minutes
Purpose of this activity
This activity gets participants to brainstorm common excuses for why certain people are not included in WASH programming, and then to “defend” or develop counter-replies to these excuses. The main purposes are:
- To explore some of the common excuses (reasons) why people with disabilities, the elderly, and other groups, are not included in WASH programming – when they easily could be.
- To explore and understand the participants own perceptions about some of these common excuses, and reflect on their own practices/actions (or non action!).
- To get participants to discuss practical, actionable ways that they can include and involve people with disabilities, elderly, and other groups which face discrimination, in WASH programming.
Learning objectives
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Recognise some excuses that WASH actors commonly state as reasons why people with disabilities and other groups are not included in WASH programming.
- Describe some practical ways that they (as WASH practitioners or staff) can include people with disabilities and other groups in their WASH activities and programming.
Materials and supplies required
- Flip chart paper and markers (for the facilitator, and for each group)
