Session length: 45 minutes
Purpose
To get participants to reflect on stereotypes and prejudices that lead us to ‘label’ people, how these may result from cultural and social expectations and norms, and what the consequences might be on the lives of affected people – in particular in terms of access to WASH.
Learning objectives
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Reflect on stereotypes and prejudices (often based on physical characteristics) that lead us to ‘label’ people, which may result from cultural and social expectations and norms.
- Explain the consequences of stereotypes, prejudices and ‘labels’ on the lives of affected people (stigmatization, discrimination, marginalization, exclusion, violence, etc.) and in particular what this means for access to WASH.
- Develop critical thinking, dropping bias, and non-judgement to question perceptions, preconceived ideas, generalizations and ‘labels’ and, as a result, be better equipped to take action to promote PGI sensitive approaches as part of Red Cross Red Crescent work.
Materials needed
- Post it notes with label for each participant, flip chart and markers.
